Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------
John,
Can observations for multiple hours/minutes for each day be located on one
text file as input to the ASCII2NC tool? Will the MET package treat each
record in the file individually when doing the interpolation by hour in
Point Stat?
Thanks,
James

James,
You can organize the data in the ASCII2NC file in whatever way is most
convenient for you. For example, you could put 1 hour's worth on
observations into each file or 1 month's worth. The key thing
is defining the matching time window when you run Point-Stat.
Specifically, when you run Point-Stat, you pass it a gridded forecast
file and a NetCDF point observation file (the output of PB2NC or
ASCII2NC). Assume that your gridded forecast file is valid at time T.
When you run Point-Stat, it looks in the Point-Stat config file for
the beg_ds and end_ds parameters which define the matching
time window. Any observations whose valid time falls in the time
window between T+beg_ds and T+end_ds will be used in the verification.
Alternatively, you can manually override the matching time
window by using the Point-Stat command line options "-obs_valid_beg"
and "-obs_valid_end".
In summary, organize your observations in whatever way is most
convenient for you. When you run Point-Stat, make sure the point
observation file you pass it contains the obs that you want to use for
the verification. And use beg_ds and end_ds or -obs_valid_beg and
-obs_valid_end to set the matching time window you'd like to use for
your verification.
Hope that helps clarify.
