Neil,

The data you're looking at in DS461.0 is WMO BUFR data.  MET currently is compatible with PREPBUFR data which is slightly different.

For example, please take a look at DSS337.0 - that's PREPBUFR data.

However, you're the second person who in recent days has asked about using BUFR data.  So I'll download some sample DS461.0 data and try to assess what it would take to get MET to read these datasets.
