Sarah,
We were recently contacted by someone from the GNU Scientific Library (GSL) development team about an issue with the terms of use we've defined for MET (the Model Evaluation Tools).
GSL is some code that MET links to for computing confidence intervals. So it's an external library package to which we link - we don't actually redistribute any of the GSL code itself.
According the Brian Gough, from GSL, in order to continue linking to the GSL library, we'll need to make our terms of use compatible with the "GNU Public License (GPL)", which governs the use of GSL
and many other GNU software packages.
In particular, Brian thinks that the following is in conflict with the GPL:
MET Terms of Use:
Part 1. You shall not sell, license or transfer for a fee the Software, or any work that in any manner contains the Software.
According to Brian, under the GPL, it must be possible to charge a fee for transferring copies.
I'm wondering if you'd be able to provide some advice regarding this issue.
Here's are links to the...
MET Terms of Use: http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/termsofuse.php
GNU Public License: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html
Would you be able to help us reconcile this issue?
Thanks,
John Halley-Gotway
