Ph. D. position on statistics and dynamics of compound climate extremes

Uppsala University, Sweden

There is an opening for an ERC-funded Ph. D. position in my group at
Uppsala University. The *preferred start date is October 2026, but there is
flexibility for earlier or later dates*, and the typical duration of a Ph.
D. in Sweden is 48 months.

*Deadline for applications: 17th June*

*Further details and application form here
<https://uu.varbi.com/en/what:job/jobID:939355/>*

Applications over email will not be accepted.

*The position*

You will work on compiling statistical properities of compound extremes and
on connecting their dynamics and occurrence to different atmospheric
circulation features. Teaching/supervising duties up to 20% are possible on
a voluntary basis. You will be based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences in
Uppsala, but will be expected to travel both nationally and
internationally.

*The research group*

I coordinate a lively research group based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences
in Uppsala, which focuses on the dynamics of extreme climate events in the
mid and high latitudes and their impacts. We currently host several
nationally funded and Horizon Europe projects. More information on our
ongoing research can be found at *https://gmessori.eu/
<https://gmessori.eu/>*. You will contribute to an ERC project focussing on
quantitative analyses of mid-latitude compound climate extremes in recent
and future climates: DYCLEX <http://gmessori.eu/dyclex-erc>.

*The department*

Uppsala University is a comprehensive, research-intensive university with a
strong international standing. The Department of Earth Sciences (
https://www.geo.uu.se/ <https://www.geo.uu.se/?languageId=1>) is one of the
most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on
subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere and human
society, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the
formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and
graduate levels.
