Subject: [ES_JOBS_NET] TWO Research Scientist positions: UAH Lab for Applied Science / NASA EarthRISE
We are looking to hire for two Research Scientist positions located in Huntsville, Alabama.
1) Research Scientist: Water and Energy Cycle Science
https://careers.uah.edu/cw/en-us/job/503859/research-scientist-ii-step-14
UAH's Lab for Applied Science (LAS) is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to support the execution of cross-cutting water and energy cycle science. Operating within Earth Action, the EarthRISE project office focuses on developing last-mile solutions, improving coordinated action across NASA Earth Science, and fostering workforce development. This position is two-fold: the candidate will execute foundational research analyzing Earth’s energy and water cycles while also providing essential technical support to multiple initiatives across the NASA Earth System Science Research Program (ESSRP) and Earth Action. A successful candidate will help execute work that bridges rigorous Earth science with high-profile applications, supporting multi-mission and integrated modeling activities across NASA. This includes providing scientific context and data analysis support for efforts aligned with the Multisource Integrated Observatory (MIO), the Integrated Modeling Virtual Institute (IMVI), and the NASA Energy and Water Cycle Study (NEWS). To effectively support integrated Earth System Modeling, the candidate must be highly conversant in data assimilation approaches and Earth system modeling techniques. We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong focus on terrestrial water budget remote sensing and modeling, though a broad ability to converse around all domains of the energy and water cycle, including remote sensing, atmospheric, land, and ocean modeling, is the primary requirement. EarthRISE is a project of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) that works in collaboration with state, local, tribal, territorial, and private sector partners to use information provided by Earth observing satellites and geospatial technologies for managing environmental challenges EarthRISE’s goal is to empower decision-makers with tools, products, geospatial artificial intelligence, and services to act locally on issues such as disasters, agriculture, water, ecosystems, air quality, and health. UAH's Lab for Applied Science in Huntsville, AL, offers a flexible and dynamic work environment, with an in-house team of over 80 science professionals and numerous opportunities for growth and professional development. With a growing economy, diverse population, low cost of living, and vibrant city life, Huntsville is consistently ranked among the top places to live in the U.S.
2) Research Scientist: Agriculture and Water Resources
https://careers.uah.edu/cw/en-us/job/503871/research-scientist-ii-step-14
UAH's Lab for Applied Science (LAS) is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist with background in applied agriculture, hydrology, water resource management, and geospatial artificial intelligence. Operating within Earth Action, the EarthRISE project office focuses on developing last-mile solutions, improving coordinated action across NASA Earth Science, and fostering workforce development. EarthRISE is actively involved in developing applications in water resources, agriculture, and their critical intersection to support state, local, tribal, territorial, and private sector stakeholders. A successful candidate will lead and execute applied research leveraging Earth observations to address complex, real-world challenges such as consumptive water use, irrigation demand, drought impacts, flood mapping, and mitigation. This role requires deep domain expertise in the intersection of water and agriculture, utilizing advanced modeling and remote sensing applications (e.g., land surface hydrologic/hydraulic modeling, crop-specific remote sensing and modeling, reservoir management, and surface water level monitoring). Additionally, the candidate will make extensive use of very high-resolution commercial satellite data. A geospatial data expert who can apply sophisticated AI/ML techniques directly to Earth science and spatial datasets is sought, rather than an AI/ML generalist.
