Managing Director (Chief of Operations)
Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC)
Role Summary
The Managing Director (MD) serves as the senior operational leader and
strategic partner to the Director of the Yale Program on Climate Change
Communication. Reporting to the Director, the MD oversees operations,
administration, communications, and program management, ensuring the
effective execution and continued growth of YPCCC’s mission.
The MD provides leadership across budgeting, grants and contracts, human
resources, communications, and program delivery, while strengthening
internal systems and external partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Growth
- Advance YPCCC’s mission, strategy, and annual goals in close
partnership with the Director.
- Provide leadership for the design and delivery of programs, events,
fellowships, and partnerships.
- Foster interdisciplinary collaboration across Yale and with external
organizations.
- Contribute to fundraising and development efforts, including
identifying funding opportunities and preparing proposals and reports.
Operations & Administration
- Lead day‑to‑day operations for a ~$4M annual budget and a team of
approximately 22 FTE.
- Oversee budgeting, financial tracking, reporting, and compliance with
university policies.
- Manage human resources, including hiring, supervision, performance
management, and professional development.
- Ensure effective administrative systems, information systems, and
office operations.
- Oversee grant and contract administration from proposal development to
final reporting.
Team Leadership & Program Management
- Supervise administrative, operations, and project management staff.
- Promote clear priorities, coordination, and accountability across
teams.
- Build and sustain a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-driven team
culture.
Communications & External Engagement
- Provide strategic oversight of YPCCC communications, including digital
platforms and public-facing materials.
- Collaborate with Yale School of the Environment and university
communications teams to amplify YPCCC research and storytelling.
- Serve as a representative and spokesperson for YPCCC to internal and
external audiences.
- Support relationship-building with partners, donors, and climate
leaders.

Required Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated leadership in operations, program management, and
organizational administration.
- Strong strategic, analytical, financial, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects and competing priorities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and
external partners.
- Experience with budgeting, fundraising, and grants management.
- Experience in a university, nonprofit, or research environment
preferred.
- Experience and/or training in environmental affairs preferred.
- This position is based in New Haven, CT, and requires regular on‑site
presence; candidates must reside locally or be willing to relocate.
