We are seeking to fill two PhD positions in the Antarctic Research Centre at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. These positions will contribute to a project investigating the climate and cryosphere response of the Southern Hemisphere to a potential future weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) using climate and ice-sheet modelling. This project involves research partners in the Netherlands, Germany, USA, and Australia.

Broadly we wish the PhD projects to address the following topics:

Topic 1: How will AMOC weakening impact climate in the Southern Hemisphere?
Topic 2: How will AMOC weakening impact the Antarctic ice sheet?

While we seek to appoint one individual to each topic, the associated PhD projects are not fully prescribed, with ample scope to customise to individual research interests. These positions are fully funded for three years (fees and stipend) and project funding will support research resources (e.g. travel for conferences and research visits, computing resources, publishing, etc).

Successful candidates will have completed Master's-level study in one or more of the following: climate physics, earth system science, glaciology, meteorology, oceanography, physical geography (or other closely related fields). Experience with quantitative research methods and computer programming is advantageous.

The anticipated start date for PhD projects is 1 March 2026, or as soon as practicable thereafter.

To apply, please send an Expression of Interest (EOI) comprising: (1) a cover letter that details your motivation and relevant experience (aligned to one of the topics above), and (2) a CV that includes contact details of two academic references. Deadline for EOIs is 1 December. We hope to hold short informal interviews (online) with a shortlist of candidates in mid-December.

Please direct enquiries and EOIs to Shaun Eaves (shaun.eaves at vuw.ac.nz<mailto:shaun.eaves at vuw.ac.nz>).
