PhD and POSTDOCTORAL OPPORTUNITIES IN ARCTIC CARBON BIOGEOCHEMISTRY :
Permafrost dynamics and effects of thaw across terrestrial, stream, and
lake systems
We seek two individuals at the PhD or post-doctoral level to join a
recently-funded project <https://www.schmidtsciences.org/vicc/> to
explore the effects of rapid permafrost thaw (i.e., thermokarst) on the
global carbon cycle. The successful candidates will work to quantify
carbon dioxide and methane emissions from thaw-affected lakes and
streams across diverse geographic gradients, with a focus on source
quantification via isotopic and compositional methods, and broader
extrapolation via geospatial techniques. The successful applicants will
join established field programs in the western Canadian Arctic, working
directly with a broad suite of collaborators including scientists at the
University of Alberta (Drs. Suzanne Tank
<http://www.landoceanbiogeochemistry.ca/>, David Olefeldt
<https://caws.ualberta.ca/>, and Duane Froese
<https://cms.eas.ualberta.ca/froeselab/>), scientific collaborators in
the NWT government, and international collaborators from the Alfred
Wegener Institute, Universität Hamburg, and University of Alaska
Fairbanks.
Qualifications: Candidates should have a strong background in
biogeochemistry, aquatic chemistry, hydrology, or related disciplines,
with experience undertaking fieldwork in remote locations. Past
experience measuring gas flux from aquatic or terrestrial systems,
strong quantitative and geospatial skills, and previous northern field
experience are all strong assets for this position.
Start date: Official PhD start date will be September, 2026, with a
preference for candidates who can undertake field research via a paid
position during summer 2026. Preferred start date for postdoctoral
candidates is summer, 2026.
For more information about these positions, please contact Dr. Suzanne
Tank ( suzanne.tank at ualberta.ca). The University of Alberta
<https://www.ualberta.ca/en/index.html> is located in Edmonton, Alberta,
and is one of Canada’s top research institutions. On-campus facilities
supporting this work include the Permafrost Archives Science ( PACS
<https://sites.google.com/ualberta.ca/pacslab/home?authuser=0>)
Laboratory, and the Biogeochemical Analytical Service Laboratory ( BASL
<https://basl.biology.ualberta.ca/>).
To apply: Send a cover letter describing your fit for the position and
research interests; curriculum vitae; and contact information for three
references to suzanne.tank at ualberta.ca. Rolling reviews of applicants
will begin on November 24, 2025 and will continue until suitable
candidates are identified.
