External Engagement Lead, Pacific Northwest Seismic Network
The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network seeks a skilled communicator and strategic thinker to lead our External Engagement Team. PNSN’s mission is to monitor the Pacific Northwest (PNW) region for earthquakes and other hazardous events and provide timely, accurate, and authoritative earthquake information to local, state, and federal officials and to the public. PNSN is the premier source of vetted information about earthquake and volcano hazards in the PNW, and we envision that the person who fills this position will have a prominent role in the communication of and preparation for seismic events in our region.
Our ideal candidate has experience communicating complex scientific or engineering topics to a wide spectrum of audiences. In addition, they can plan and execute a long-term strategy that includes pursuing key partnerships, managing science communications via our website and traditional and social media, interacting with UW’s offices of government relations, news, and development, and being an advocate and spokesperson for earthquake awareness throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Duties and activities may include (but are not limited to):

  *   Leading strategic planning related to all external engagement goals which includes acting as an integral partner of state-level earthquake safety programs and engaging in cooperative planning of long-range efforts with the federal government such as ShakeAlert.
  *   Serving as social and traditional media coordinator as well as web content manager.
  *   Developing and carrying out education, outreach, and advocacy strategy and planning on behalf of PNSN, including supervision of regular staff and student employee efforts.
  *   Acting as a spokesperson for and outward-facing representative of, the PNSN in multiple ways, including as liaison to legislatures and other branches and agencies of government at all levels, many other key partners public and private, and the people of the Pacific Northwest.
