CleanAIRE NC is statewide nonprofit organization working for clean air and
climate change solutions since 2003.

CleanAIRE NC advocates for clean air and environmental justice through
community science, education, health, and advocacy. We partner with
impacted communities, researchers, and public agencies to create a
healthier and more equitable North Carolina.
PROGRAM BACKGROUND
CleanAIRE NC’s Community Science Program is one of the most respected in
the country for its robust network of community-deployed air monitors,
partnerships with universities and government agencies, and its unique
ability to translate data into action. At the core is the AirKeepers Program

residents with low-cost air sensors and the training to understand and use
the data to advocate for clean air in their communities.
POSITION
The Community Science Manager leads CleanAIRE NC’s community-based air
monitoring work across North Carolina. This role combines technical skill
with deep community engagement, helping to translate real-time air quality
data into tools for education, advocacy, and resilience. The Program
Manager recruits and supports community partners, manages sensor networks
and data systems, and builds collaborative relationships across the state
to advance CleanAIRE NC’s mission.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Management & Strategy
- Implement and scale CleanAIRE’s AirKeeper Program and community
monitoring networks.
- Manage the deployment of air sensors in strategic “cluster networks”
(10–15 monitors) near pollution sources, prioritizing disproportionately
impacted or Environmental Justice communities.
- Maintain inventory and ensure functionality of monitoring networks.
Data & Technical Support
- Collect, process, and analyze air quality data from sensors utilized
by the Community Science Program (e.g. PurpleAir, AirNote, MODULAIR, and
AirBeams).
- Oversee updates and improvements to the CleanAIRE NC AirKeeper
Dashboard <https://cleanairenc.org/airkeeper-dashboard/> related to
sensor elements/tools, including data visualization and reporting
enhancements.
- Support researchers, policymakers, and community members in
interpreting and using data, as well as forming relationships with
technical partners when needed to advance programmatic goals.
Community Engagement & Education
- Recruit, train, and support AirKeepers through workshops, the
Community Science Orientation, and ongoing communication.
- Collaborate with CleanAIRE’s EJ and Education Programs to develop
culturally relevant learning materials.
- Facilitate community discussions about air quality findings and
support data-informed advocacy.
Cross-Team & External Collaboration
- Work with university researchers, health professionals, and grassroots
organizations to advance Community Science monitoring efforts.
- Co-lead grant development and project planning with CleanAIRE’s
development and program teams.
- Coordinate with the CleanAIRE NC Community Science Advisory Board to
guide program direction.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong project management and facilitation skills; able to lead
trainings and workshops.
- Ability to translate scientific or complex data for a wide range of
audiences.
- Experience with data, data analysis, and data visualization related to
environmental and/or air quality data
- Commitment to environmental justice and equitable community
engagement. Experience working with communities disproportionately affected
by air pollution is a plus.
- BS degree in environmental science or related field, or equivalent
education and/or 2-5 years of experience desired.
- Familiarity with air monitoring equipment (e.g., PurpleAir) or
community science preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment requires someone who is a self-starter, confident,
responsible, reliable, enthusiastic, and goal-oriented. The individual must
be flexible in a rapidly changing work environment and work well
independently and as part of a team.
Must be able to endure some physical exertion, such as long periods of
standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or
similar activities; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as
office equipment and boxes of supplies. The work may require specific but
common physical characteristics and abilities, such as lifting up to 50
pounds, above-average agility, and dexterity.
