Summary
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher who will conduct research on extratropical atmospheric circulation extremes and their relation to tropical and extratropical climate variability and change, with emphasis on atmospheric blocking and midlatitude circulation extremes. This primarily includes the development and application of machine learning/artificial intelligence (ML/AI) models, advanced statistical analysis, design and performance of targeted dynamical and ML/AI model experiments, as well as development of theory, analysis of ocean and atmosphere observations and experiments with state-of-the-art coupled climate models and ML/AI models.
The researcher will work under the supervision of Prof. Christina Karamperidou at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Hawaii at Manoa (Honolulu, HI, USA).
Qualifications:
- Education: PhD from an accredited college or university in Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, Engineering, Applied Math of Physics, Computer/Data Science or related field.
- Experience: One to three (1-3) years of research experience using numerical and machine learning models; analyzing climate model output data; presenting scientific results to scientific and general audiences; writing reports and manuscripts for scientific publications.
- Knowledge: Strong foundation in atmospheric and climate dynamics and background in machine learning.
- Abilities & skills: Ability to conduct research and work collaboratively with colleagues. Ability to develop machine learning models, and analyze model experiments. Strong communication and scientific writing skills. Proficiency in computer applications skills, and working with high-performance computing clusters. Ability to effectively conduct work remotely (e.g., telework) as applicable. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
- Secondary qualifications: Knowledge of Python, and TensorFlow/Keras is preferred. Prior experience running ML/AI weather forecasting models and/or climate models is preferred.
