Hi,

I'm writing with regard to a few job openings at my lab at UConn, Department of Earth Sciences. I have a few open positions for Ph.D. as well as an open postdoc position focused on reaction transport modeling in marine sediment. Please find below the job posting for Ph.D. and postdoc:

For Ph.D.:

"I am looking to recruit both graduate students to join my group at the University of Connecticut beginning in 2026.

Our work will span a wide range of topics, including:

Reconstructing and modeling the Earth’s past carbon cycle,
Advancing our understanding of the modern carbon cycle,
Exploring innovative approaches to carbon capture and critical mineral extraction.

These positions will offer the chance to work at the intersection of fundamental Earth system science and solutions for climate and sustainability challenges.

Please feel free to reach out for more information or to discuss a potential fit. "

For Postdoc:

"We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join an interdisciplinary research project between the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture<https://www.linkedin.com/company/ycncc/> and the University of Connecticut<https://www.linkedin.com/company/university-of-connecticut/> focused on blue carbon ecosystems (e.g., mangroves, salt marshes, seagrasses) as sites for ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

The postdoc will lead and develop sediment diagenetic and reactive-transport models to investigate alkalinity generation, carbon cycling, and geochemical feedbacks at the sediment–water interface, with implications for scalable and durable climate mitigation strategies.

A strong modeling and computational background, as well as proficiency in MATLAB and other programming languages (e.g., Python) are required.

Preferred experiences include experience with sediment biogeochemistry, porewater chemistry, or coastal systems. Familiarity with reactive-transport frameworks (e.g., 1-D or multi-D diagenetic models). Interest in carbon dioxide removal, ocean alkalinity enhancement, or climate mitigation research. Strong scientific writing skill is also preferred.

Location will be at the University of Connecticut (Storrs, CT), Department of Earth Sciences, with a flexible start date and appointment duration of 1 year, and renewable for up to 2 years contingent upon performance.

Potential applicants can email me at mojtaba.fakhraee at uconn.edu<mailto:mojtaba.fakhraee at uconn.edu> with:
- A cover letter describing research interests and relevant experience
- A CV
- Contact information for 2–3 references.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled."

Thanks,

-Moji
