The Remote Sensing Ecohydrology Group at Stanford University, led by Prof.
Alex Konings is looking for a new postdoc. One of the main research threads
in our group concerns the development and use of microwave remote
sensing-based proxies of vegetation water content, which depends on live
fuel moisture (which, in turn, is expected to co-vary with plant water
potential) as well as vegetation structure and biomass and temperature.
Disentangling live fuel moisture’s effect on VOD would enable a range of
applications related to understanding vegetation’s response to water
stress.

The postdoc would work to build new retrieval algorithms to determine live
fuel moisture content (which is related to leaf water potential) from
L-band SMAP observations, spaceborne lidar (to account for biomass
effects), and additional supplementary data. The project could use either
physically based and/or machine learning approaches.

If you have strong computational and communication skills and experience
working with microwave remote sensing, spaceborne lidar, retrieval of
geophysical variables, and/or machine learning, you may be a great fit for
this position. To apply, please send a cover letter and CV to Alex Konings
at konings at stanford.edu. The pay is commensurate with experience, and is
adjusted for the high cost of living in the Palo Alto, CA area where
Stanford is located. An in-person appointment would be preferred because of
university regulations, although a partially remote position (if the
candidate is based in the US) could be discussed.
