Dr. Esther Mullens at the University of Florida is seeking a PhD student with a background in geographic sciences, climatology, and/or meteorology to work on projects related to atmospheric and climate science. Mullens’ lab’s primary research themes are associated with hydro climatic extremes from the meteorological perspective, including examining weather systems in a changing climate, precipitation trends, variability, and regional-local applied climatology. The student would be welcome to craft their research plan within the framework of climatology/atmospheric sciences. The University of Florida Department of Geography is a vibrant and collegiate unit who work on a wide variety of sub-disciplines. PhD students who apply to the program By December 1 are considered for teaching assistantships (9 month @ $21,000 with opportunities for additional summer pay, ~10-12 awarded annually), and research assistantships (1-2 awarded annually).
Students who wish to apply to Mullens group should have a background in physical geography with emphasis on climatology and/or meteorology, having taken substantive coursework in climatology/atmospheric science, and some experience in computational methods, or ‘big data’ analysis. Students should also be familiar with UNIX-based platforms and have used software commonly used in the climate sciences, such as R, Python, NCL, GIS. Good oral and written communication skills are desired. For a Teaching Assistant position, candidates should be competent in written and spoken English.
