A NOAA Marine Debris Program-funded project to Stockton University<https://stockton.edu/> is recruiting two (2) motivated Coastal Zone Management M.S. (preferred) / P.S.M. students interested in pursuing thesis / capstone research on ALDFG (abandoned, lost, discarded fishing gear) / ADV (abandoned and derelict vessels) detection and removal in New Jersey coastal bays. Graduate students will receive training to oversee sonar operations / mapping of ALDFGs, develop and conduct a state-wide ADV assessment program, participate in ADV removals through contractor coordination, engage with and provide training for the commercial fishing community, supervise and train undergraduate students, compile project databases, and assist with NOAA reporting. Students will be working in an inclusive, highly collaborative environment involving faculty, staff, undergraduate students, volunteers, city officials, and regional stakeholders.
Competitive candidates should have a B.S. degree in Environmental Science, Marine Science, Biology or a related major. Demonstrated GIS coursework / experience preferred. The project will benefit students with the ability to manage multiple demands on their time, self-direct, and follow-through on tasks.
