Postdoctoral Researcher: Fire Ecology and Biogeochemistry, University of Idaho

About the position: A postdoctoral position in fire ecology and biogeochemistry in natural ecosystems is available in the Miesel lab at the University of Idaho. Research will focus on investigating biogeochemical responses to wildfire and soil heating, and mechanisms controlling soil organic matter persistence within and across ecosystems. The position will be based in the Department of Forest, Rangeland, and Fire Sciences in the College of Natural Resources at the University of Idaho (Moscow, ID). Responsibilities will be based primarily in office and laboratory environments, although the opportunity to participate in field sampling in wildfire sites may be available for interested candidates depending on experience and qualifications. The postdoc will be encouraged to develop independent research that contributes to current program themes and will have access to unique resources for fire experiments including the IFIRE Combustion Laboratory and the U of I Experimental Forest. The postdoc will receive mentoring in professional development according to individual interests and career goals and will have opportunities to engage with collaborators at the UI and other institutions and agencies. The position is available immediately, with start dates prior to August 2024 preferred. This is a full-time, exempt, benefits-eligible position, with salary commensurate with experience. The position will be offered as a one-year contract with annual renewals based on satisfactory performance and funding availability.

Required qualifications: Ph.D. in ecology, soil science, forestry, earth science, or related field, with a focus on soil ecology or biogeochemistry; strong experience conducting statistical analysis including multivariate approaches; demonstrated oral and written communication skills for English-language audiences; demonstrated record of published peer-reviewed publications in leading English-language journals; ability to work independently and collaboratively to initiate and complete quality research products. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience conducting research on natural ecosystems (especially fire-affected environments). Employment offers are contingent upon the ability to pass a criminal background check.

Responsibilities:

  *   Conduct laboratory analyses on soil mineral and/or organic horizon samples.
  *   Lead statistical analyses and manuscript development.
  *   Disseminate research results through presentations and peer reviewed publications.
  *   Contribute to mentoring undergraduate and graduate student researchers.
