See all opportunities at VitriVax, Inc: HERE The Senior Scientist in Particle Characterization in the Product Research and Development (PRD) group is responsible for developing and applying analytical methods to characterize spray dried and ALTA(tm) products and in-process materials containing a variety of active pharmaceutical ingredients. The Senior Scientist must adapt and apply typical particle size analysis for pharmaceutical products as well as more advanced solid-state characterization of glassy spray dried particles and metal oxide coatings, often in cases where sample material is limited. This role reports to the Head of PRD and will work with a team of scientists and research associates for training and study execution. This role will also manage a small team of research associates. This is a full-time position, located in Boulder, Colorado.
Description
Responsibilities and Duties:
*       In-house subject matter expert for ALTA(tm) and spray dried particle characterization.
*       Remains up to date on particle characterization techniques and manages testing by 3rd parties (academic or CDMO).
*       Recommends/specifies equipment for purchase that has high potential to address routine characterization or QC testing of ALTA(tm) products and intermediates.
*       Robust technical skills and experience designing, qualifying, validating, transferring, and troubleshooting complex analytical methods.
*       Independently designs, executes and authors reports summarizing material properties of ALTA(tm) particles, intermediates and processes.
*       Develops/qualifies methods and trains staff on methods for routine use and supports investigations when material or methods deviate from expectations.
*       Works effectively and dynamically in cross-functional teams to complete partner projects under aggressive timelines.
*       Supports investigations of ALTA(tm) manufacturing processes.
*       Maintains equipment and ensures that methods and equipment are fit-for-purpose.
*       Works closely with Formulation Development, Particle Engineering, and Quality Assurance to establish specifications and conduct stability studies.
*       Contributes toward portions of IND or BLA eCTD module 2 and 3.
*       Adheres to Company policies and safety guidelines.
Education and Experience
*       Must be able to perform the responsibilities and duties listed above.
*       A PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or related field with dissertation research characterizing powder properties.
*       An in-depth understanding of particle size analysis techniques such as laser diffraction and optical imaging.
*       Experience in solid-state characterization, encompassing X-ray powder diffraction, FTIR, polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, NMR, among others.
*       Experience with a variety of general analytical techniques (i.e. Karl Fisher, surface area analysis, SEM, density, ICP-MS, AAS, powder flowability and friability, etc.)
*       Background working with lyophilized or spray dried pharmaceutical products, particularly with proteins, lipids, and/or mRNA lyophilization preferred
*       Supervisory experience and cross functional team leadership.
*       Understanding of ICH Q8, Q9, and Q10 and Quality by Design.
*       Proficient in the use of statistical analysis methods and standard office tools like Excel and Word.

Salary and Benefits
The position may be filled at the Senior Scientist or Scientist level. The level will be determined by the applicant's experience and alignment with current and future responsibilities.
*      Senior Scientist: PhD+5 years or BA+10 years in an academic program aligned with VitriVax needs - range $130,000 - $170,000 DOE
*      Scientist - PhD or BA+5 years in an academic program aligned with VitriVax needs - range $100,000 - $120,000 DOE
