About the GLOBE Program
In April 2025, the GLOBE Program will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary, having launched on Earth Day, April 1995.
The GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) Program is an international science and education program that focuses on promoting scientific literacy and building connections between people passionate about the environment. GLOBE has three primary goals: increasing environmental awareness, contributing to increased scientific understanding of the Earth and supporting improved student achievement in science and mathematics.
Intern Project Description
Interns can work remotely or in person at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
This intern will generate data-driven insights from the GLOBE Program’s environmental data, assessing the temporal and spatial variations of submitted environmental data. The intern will also explore the participation trends of countries and schools/informal education organizations in the GLOBE Program. The intern can expect to work largely on independent assignments but will meet regularly with their mentor. Background information will be provided to the intern.
Your work will contribute directly to our efforts in identifying climatic changes over the 30 years of data collection, understanding participAation in the GLOBE Program, and possible ways to improve ongoing involvement. This internship will provide interested students with the opportunity to explore the GLOBE Program’s Application Programming Interface (API), Advanced Data Access Tool (ADAT), and the GLOBE Visualization tool.
Desirable skills include:
● Data analysis skills including data mining of large datasets, metadata, charts, and presentation materials.
● The intern should have a strong understanding of a broad range of scientific and education topics.
● Data science or scientific programming.
● Proficiency with Microsoft suite including PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
● Experience with Application Programming Interface (API) desired.
● Strong science communication skills.
● Interest in community engagement and student development.
● Intern will work with Program Managers and Support Scientists.
● Excellent organizational skill.
Deliverables
The deliverable will be a report/presentation summarizing any findings or observations from any spatial and temporal environmental changes presented by the data. The report will also explore the data submission trends and history of involvement by participating organizations.
