Funded Graduate Student Opportunity: Implementing New Data Assimilation Methods into OpenIFS

Are you passionate about advancing atmospheric modeling to improve weather forecasts? Do you enjoy working with state-of-the-art weather models and experimenting with new data assimilation (DA) techniques? If so, this funded graduate student position might be a good fit for you.

Starting Date: Fall 2025

Description: This project focuses on integrating innovative data assimilation methods into OpenIFS, a research version of the operational weather forecast model developed by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). OpenIFS retains the core capabilities of the IFS model, but it does not include the operational 4D-Var system. One of your main tasks will be to interface OpenIFS with the Ensemble Score Filter (EnSF), a new ensemble DA method that leverages generative machine learning techniques. Building on our successful application of EnSF in idealized atmospheric models, this project aims to extend its use to more realistic weather forecasting applications.

How to apply?

1) Email Prof. Hristo Chipilski at hchipilski at fsu.edu<mailto:hchipilski at fsu.edu> with (i) a brief description of research interests and (ii) a CV. Please use the subject line “Fall 2025: OpenIFS DA project”.

2) Submit your graduate student application to the Department of Scientific Computing at https://www.sc.fsu.edu/graduate/overview. You can choose between the M.S. and Ph.D. in Computational Science degrees. Please keep in mind that the deadline for full consideration in Jan. 15, 2025, and that the Ph.D. application requires an active GRE score.
