The US Geological Survey is hiring a physical scientist<https://www.usajobs.gov/job/804584600> to work in the Volcano Hazard Program in the Natural Hazards Mission Area. The physical scientist will serve as a Geoscience Advisor for the US Agency for International Development's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) and the liaison between BHA and the Volcano Disaster Assistance Program. They will be stationed at BHA headquarters in Washington DC.
The solicitation is open until Aug 27, or until 40 applications are received.
As a Physical Scientist within the Natural Hazards Mission Area, some of your specific duties will include:
* Provides authoritative guidance to US Agency for International Development/Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID/BHA) concerning international volcanic events and their potential to become disasters that require a humanitarian response from the U.S. government.
* Coordinates a team of USGS-BHA Geoscience Advisors who manage or represent USGS-BHA- funded projects including the Landslide and Earthquake Disaster Assistance Teams, the Volcano Disaster Assistance Program, and any other nascent or future USGS efforts.
* Independently provides programming and policy guidance to USAID and BHA for geological-hazard related projects, mainly for volcanic events; including the use of independent, decision- making authority to develop and plan funding for geological hazard-related programs.
* Provides high-level geological-hazard guidance to other USAID bureaus and programs as well as to other USG agencies.
* Leads and participates in international crisis-response activities on behalf of BHA and USGS, which may include on-site or remote assistance in the evaluation of potential hazards and risks to the U.S. and foreign governments, as well as appropriate response.
