We invite applications for two Ph.D. positions to work on interdisciplinary projects in atmospheric aerosol research in Dr. Mingyi Wang’s lab (https://mingyi-w.github.io<https://mingyi-w.github.io/>) in the Department of Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago beginning in Fall 2024.

Aerosols are particularly important in the atmosphere because they have masked a large but highly uncertain fraction of global warming, via their direct effect of reflecting incoming solar radiation and indirect effect of serving as seeds for cloud formation. Our lab’s mission is to learn (and have fun) as much as we can about aerosol particle formation and its impact on air quality and climate change. Specifically, we leverage interdisciplinary expertise in atmospheric chemistry and aerosol microphysics to understand how particle formation drives urban smog, how aerosol forcing will change in future emission scenarios, and how aerosol dynamics can inform climate intervention research.

Successful candidates will receive training in a wide range of skills, including state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and particle sizing techniques, box modeling, machine learning, data analysis, and scientific communication. We strive to match the research projects with students' interests and career plans. In addition to the specific research focus, the students will have the opportunity to participate in other research efforts, such as the Climate Systems Engineering Initiative (https://climateengineering.uchicago.edu<https://climateengineering.uchicago.edu/>) and the CERN CLOUD project (https://home.cern/science/experiments/cloud), and to collaborate with a diverse group of prominent researchers within and beyond the University of Chicago.

Applications:

We encourage prospective students to contact us as soon as possible to discuss the programs and research opportunities. Please send a CV and a brief description of your research interests to Dr. Mingyi Wang (mingyiw at uchicago.edu<mailto:mingyiw at uchicago.edu>) with the subject line “Prospective student”. Application materials should be submitted to the Department of Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago via https://apply-psd.uchicago.edu/apply/. The application deadline for admission to the Fall 2024 graduate program is Monday, December 18, 2023.
