Position Information
Our mission is to understand and provide solutions to the most challenging resource issues facing our planet. We explore systems on our planet through basic research and applied solutions. As such, we bring together natural and social sciences to propel North Carolina as a leader in local and global environmental research and innovation. We elevate research into understanding by investigating the diverse and interactive systems that regulate the environment, including consequences for humans and other organisms. We are committed to educating students to improve understanding for future generations.

Position Summary
The Environment, Energy and Ecology Program (E3P) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to fill two teaching assistant professor (non-tenure track) positions. Both positions have an initial appointment for 5 years and are renewable after that. We seek faculty who can teach courses in two broad areas within a general focus on energy and energy economics: 1) a general overview of the US electricity system, covering topics such as generation, transmission, distribution, and emissions, and 2) business and finance fundamentals focused on the energy transition, sustainable business and finance models or carbon markets and carbon trading. Successful candidates must be willing to teach at all undergraduate levels, including introductory courses through upper-level courses in their area of specialization. Each position carries a 3-course load per semester requirement. One of these courses can be a client-based capstone that involves shepherding a group of 8-10 seniors towards a deliverable for an environmental or energy-related the client. We are open with regards to what the other courses could be, but have needs for courses in energy, energy economics, and energy finance. The Program has a strong reputation for experiential instruction – top candidates will be interested in fostering community partners and engaging students beyond the classroom. In addition to teaching, each position also includes advising E3P majors. A Ph.D. is preferred, but we will also consider exceptional candidates with Master’s degrees in engineering, business administration, or public administration. The E3P shares the University’s commitment to building understanding across differences, creating conditions to ensure the equitable educational and social benefits of diversity and cultivating an inclusive and supportive environment for undergraduate, graduate and professional students, faculty and staff – where every person feels valued and has an opportunity to add value.

We will begin reviewing applications January 15, 2024

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
A Ph.D. is preferred, but we will also consider exceptional candidates with Master’s degrees in engineering, business administration, or public administration.
