The Gilhooly lab<https://gilhoolysil.earthsciences.iupui.edu/> in the Department of Earth Sciences at Indiana University Indianapolis is recruiting a PhD student to study how viral infection controls the carbon and sulfur isotopic fractionations produced by phototrophic sulfur bacteria. For more about the influence of phages and the framework of this research, see our recent paper at https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-023-00796-4.

The student will develop their dissertation research in collaboration with a team of virologists and geochemists from the Universities of Miami, Pittsburgh, and Lausanne supported by a NASA Exobiology grant. We seek an applicant with a background in stable isotopes, biogeochemistry, geobiology, or microbiology. The research involves field work, isotopic analyses, and microbial mesocosm experiments. Student stipend, tuition, and benefits are supported by the grant.

For those interested, please contact Bill Gilhooly at wgilhool at iu.edu<mailto:wgilhool at iu.edu>.

The position will start in Fall 2024.

Applications are due by January 15, 2024
