Environmental/Climate Data and Visualization Analyst
In the Discovery Partners Institute (DPI)<https://dpi.uillinois.edu/> at the University of Illinois System, we seek an Environmental/Climate Data and Visualization Analyst with extensive experience handling environmental and climate data, performing statistical and data analysis, and developing user-friendly data visualization interfaces and dashboards. This position will offer the candidate the opportunity to contribute to a range of challenging and engaging environmental projects that address urban climate issues from a variety of perspectives. The candidate must be able to use problem-solving skills to develop creative solutions utilizing advanced data analysis and methodologies.
This is a multiple-year opportunity, but as always within the university system, the position will be renewed every year following an annual performance evaluation and availability of funding. The candidate will get an opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team composed of highly motivated postdocs and scientists at DPI.
Desired:
* Data Analytics
* Experience with spatial and time series data, especially weather and geospatial datasets
* Experience with one or more of the following: working on data in a high-performance computing cluster environment; parallel processing techniques, e.g., pipeline- and multi-processing and atomic operations
* Knowledge of statistical packages
* Experience handling geo-registered raster datasets and volumetric datasets; expertise in handling heterogeneous data from multi-platform (ground-based, airborne, balloon-borne, ship-borne, satellite-borne, etc.) datasets from different formats; experience with demographic and health data and fusing in a consistent spatially registered representation
* Experience with cloud-native data formats and access methods such as zarr, h5pyd, OPeNDAP
* Visualization
* Expertise and experience working with data science and visualization libraries like D3, xarray, geopandas, matplotlib, widgyts, etc.
* Experience working with ArcGIS or cyber-GIS
* Experience developing dynamic dashboards for climate and social data
* Strong programming background (ideally including experience with programming languages such as Fortran, C++, Python, and JavaScript, and front-end frameworks such as React and Angular)
* Experience in machine learning is a plus but not required
* Experience working at the intersection of social sciences and other disciplines to study urban systems may also apply
Qualifications:
* Candidates must have earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field with at least 4-5 years of experience in the data and visualization domain.
* Candidates with an M.S. degree with 2 years of experience in a related field
* Candidates with a fresh Ph.D. degree in a related field
* Ability to create products independently.
* Strong oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by a record of presenting scientific results and/or writing journal articles and/or products developed.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and students.
* Proven ability to prioritize, organize, and follow through on tasks.
