Seeking postdoctoral researcher to identify trees and their characteristics with remote sensing for public health applications.



Description

We are an interdisciplinary team investigating how urban trees reduce ambient heat and associated health outcomes including emergency department visits during extreme heat events in New York City (NYC). Our goal is to build sustainable, community-centric, scientifically rigorous urban greening solutions in the face of climate change.



This position will focus on identifying tree taxa in NYC using a combination of remote sensing techniques and data (i.e., LiDAR, PlanetScope, and aerial imagery). The resulting datasets will be used for climate modeling and epidemiological analyses; the postdoc will also have the opportunity to participate in these teams. Other potential projects include using remote sensing to quantify the amount and timing of plant reproduction for the development of airborne pollen models and forecast systems and/or a topic of the postdoc's choosing at the intersection of plant ecology and public health.



This position is primarily based in the Katz Lab (https://www.thekatzlab.com) in the School of Integrative Plant Science at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY but will include extensive collaboration with and potential co-advising by Drs. Qi Li (https://liresearch.cee.cornell.edu/) and Arnab Ghosh (https://vivo.weill.cornell.edu/display/cwid-akg9010). Remote working arrangements may be considered for excellent candidates but occasional in-person attendance of team meetings in NYC and Ithaca will be required (travel expenses will be covered).



Required qualifications

Ph.D. in remote sensing, ecology, statistics, geography, or a related field and experience with remote sensing analyses and programming in R or Python. Ability to work independently and as part of a team is required as are excellent organizational and communication skills.



Availability

Anticipated start date of September 1st although some flexibility is possible. Appointment is initially for one year with reappointment for an additional one to two years upon good performance.
