We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Plant-Soil Interactions Group in the Environmental Sciences Division, Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  The position will focus on spatial analysis and process-based modeling of wetland ecosystem carbon balance and biogeochemistry within a large-scale land surface model.

This position is part of an ongoing project led by Dr. Benjamin Sulman to simulate wetland carbon and nutrient cycling using the E3SM Earth system model.  As part of the research team, you will synthesize spatial data on wetland distributions, vegetation, and biogeochemistry to configure and evaluate model simulations of wetland ecosystems at regional to continental scales. Specific regions of interest for the project include coastal and high-latitude wetlands. This project is an exciting opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team to evaluate new processes in an Earth system scale model and build connections within the DOE and academic research communities.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  *   Conduct model simulations of biogeochemical cycles and vegetation interactions across wetland-rich landscapes at regional to continental scales
  *   Use geospatial and/or machine learning approaches to develop and synthesize spatial datasets for land surface model configuration and evaluation related to wetland biogeochemistry
  *   Communicate model developments and research results through group meetings, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed journal articles
  *   Work closely in a team of modelers within an integrated ecosystem sciences group as well as with collaborators across ORNL and other research institutions who use experimental and observational methods.

Basic Qualifications:

  *   A PhD in Earth science, geography, environmental modeling, environmental science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  *   Understanding of biogeochemical and ecological processes in wetland ecosystems
  *   Programming experience in Fortran, python, R, or related language
  *   Experience in geospatial data analysis
  *   Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills
  *   Experience working independently on scientific research and technical projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  *   Experience working in or modeling wetland ecosystems
  *   Experience developing, running, and/or evaluating ecosystem or land surface models
  *   Experience in GIS, big data, or machine learning techniques
  *   Experience developing scientific or technical software using collaborative development tools such as GitHub
  *   Experience and/or interest in scaling data and methods across various spatial and temporal scales.
  *   Interest in working collaboratively in a team science environment
  *   Excellent written and oral communication skills
  *   Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  *   Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
