The Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, Denmark invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professorship or Associate Professorship in Quaternary Geology. We seek an innovative and visionary geoscientist in the field of terrestrial Quaternary systems.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will demonstrate interdisciplinary research in Quaternary Geology with expertise in fields such as glacial geology and geomorphology, Quaternary stratigraphy and environments, and applied Quaternary studies. Experience with other aspects of the Quaternary system as well as interest in combining fieldwork, experimental work and numerical modelling will be advantageous. Knowledge of GIS applications in teaching and research is welcome.

The successful candidate will have a strong international research standing and a broad multidisciplinary research network. Their scientific profile will be reflected in relevant publications in international peer-reviewed journals. Proven ability to attract external research funding and documented teaching skills are required.

The candidate will expand research collaborations at the highest international level following their scientific interests and priorities, and establish a vibrant research group utilizing external funding from national and international sources. The appointee will develop and teach classroom and field courses, and supervise students at all academic levels. The appointee will have interest in getting engaged with the Quaternary geology of Denmark, in developing collaboration with industrial partners in the field of applied Quaternary studies, and in cooperation with other research units at Aarhus University. Within the Department of Geoscience, the appointee will develop collaboration with other research groups in climate, geochronology, hydrogeology and natural resources.

Department of Geoscience
The Department of Geoscience<https://geo.au.dk/en/> currently employs around 110 staff and has a strong research profile spanning a broad range of geological and geophysical disciplines including the basic and applied aspects of the Quaternary system (palaeoceanography, landscape evolution, glacial geology, sedimentary record, stratigraphy, geochronology, hydrogeology, hydrogeophysics). These fields are represented by several professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral fellows and Ph.D. students. The Department is well equipped for Quaternary research and teaching with infrastructure including sedimentological, geochronological (cosmogenic-nuclide dating), geochemical and micropalaeontological laboratories, as well as a full range of shallow geophysical infrastructure. We also have strong links to other departments at Aarhus University, including Physics and Astronomy (AMS radiocarbon dating), Engineering, Biology, and Archaeology.

Natural Sciences Tenure Track

Highly qualified candidates are appointed as Assistant Professors for a period of six years with the prospect of performance- based advancement to a tenured Associate Professorship position.

The aim of the Natural Sciences Tenure Track Programme is to:

  *   to promote the early development of independent research success early in the career of scientists
  *   to create transparency in the academic career path

As part of the tenure track position, the candidate is offered:

  *   access to research infrastructure
  *   capability development, including postgraduate teacher training

  *   support to develop scientific networks and to secure interdisciplinary research at the highest level

As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aarhus University. In exceptional cases, Aarhus University can offer particularly talented Associate Professors to be admitted to a promotion program to Professor without an open advertisement. To be nominated for the promotion program, the Associate Professor must be assessed within a few years of focused career advancement as able to obtain qualifications corresponding to a professorship appointment in an open call.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive their assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.
