The Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is searching for an individual to serve as their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Senior Coordinator. The selected individual will help lead the development and execution of the division’s diversity strategic plan to build a more inclusive culture and embrace a diverse working environment. This position is part-time.
Our vision is to actively build a community that supports all members of the division to do their best work and learn in an environment free from bias, and that enables the division, its associated centers, and its members to reach beyond our walls to optimize the benefits of our work to all members of society. Division resources will be provided to best support these strategic goals.
Essential Job Duties
* Attend and co-chair DEI Committee meetings. Schedule meetings, take notes, and post minutes.
* Coordinate inreach and outreach for various division groups.
* Be a point of contact to direct division members to Institute DEI resources and Institute affinity groups.
* Be a point of contact with the Caltech Center for Teaching, Learning, and Outreach (CTLO) and the Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity (CCID) as needed for teaching/mentorship education
* Organize programs and trainings as needed.
* Help review DEI statements provided by applicants for future faculty positions.
* Regularly measure and communicate progress towards our short, medium, and long term goals.
* Assist in recruiting underrepresented students and postdocs, including travel to conferences and other universities.
* Help organize mentoring programs and events for graduate students and postdocs.
* Help plan division events that enhance division culture, including coordination of activities for affinity groups.
Basic Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in student affairs, higher education administration, business, management, organizational development, or related field, or a degree in an earth or planetary science related field.
* Three years or more of experience planning, designing, and delivering programs and practices related to diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in a complex environment.
* High level of confidentiality, tact, and resourcefulness.
* Demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices as well as a record of implementing these initiatives through to execution.
* Creative thinking skills and the ability to offer new ideas and approaches to diversity, equity, and inclusion applicable to the academic setting.
* Ability, and desire, to collaborate effectively and professionally with a variety of staff, faculty, and students.
* Strong organizational and project management skills, coupled with a strong attention to detail.
* Ability to work independently and with a team, and to manage resources effectively.
* Ability and availability for occasional travel in order to implement the agreed upon strategy and the division’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
* Experience recruiting, onboarding, and retaining students from diverse backgrounds.
