As air temperatures rise and water availability changes, changes in the soil respiration flux represent a significant feedback to future warming. As a result, this NSF-funded project will collaborate with personnel from the NSF Dynamic Water Critical Zone (CZ) cluster<https://criticalzone.org/dynamic_water> to collect and analyze soil carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen data to quantify the variability of soil respiration and the fate of soil-produced CO2 (i.e., the apparent respiratory quotient) across gradients in soil development, vegetation, and topography from mountain sites in California and Colorado, USA. Within this framework, there is flexibility for the student researcher to carve out their own research questions to address their particular interests.

The Chico State Ecohydrology lab prioritizes graduate student success through individual development and a holistic mentorship approach that encompasses data collection, analysis, communication, wellness, and professional development. The Chico State Ecohydrology lab is firmly committed to equality and inclusion in all areas of campus life, and we work together to cultivate an inclusive culture of scholarship, leadership, and accountability. If you are interested, please send an email to jfknowles at csuchico.edu that describes your research interests and experience before submitting an application. Students from historically excluded groups are especially encouraged to apply.
