We have an opening for a paid field and lab technician at the Blaszczak Watershed and Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology Lab at the University of Nevada Reno. This position is funded for approximately two years starting as early as February 2024, but the technician can start as late as early June 2024 if needed. The technician will assist PhD students and a postdoc with projects investigating cyanotoxin production in rivers in the region (i.e., CA, NV, OR, and UT).

In collaboration with graduate students, a postdoc, and under the general direction of the PI, the technician will provide support for field projects and laboratory research. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•     Sampling in wadeable streams and rivers for water, sediment, and benthic (streambed) biomass
•     Aquatic sensor (e.g., miniDOTs) maintenance and data processing
•     Conducting fieldwork in a wide range of weather conditions at local and regional sites with potential for occasional overnight camping at field sites
•     Preparation of samples for chemical analyses, including filtering, drying, grinding, and weighing samples.
•     Analysis of water samples for nutrient and ion concentrations
•     Processing of benthic mat samples for analysis of anatoxins, chlorophyll-a, organic matter
•     Identification of algae and cyanobacteria in benthic mat samples
•     Maintain lab research databases and laboratory records, including interfacing with collaborators
•     Ensure the proper ordering of inventory and supplies and maintain orderliness of the research lab.
•     Ensure all laboratory protocols and procedures adhere to chemical and general safety requirements.
•     Coordinate undergraduate student assistance and ensure they have taken proper lab safety training courses.
•     Perform data entry and summarize data using computer spreadsheets and technical software (e.g., R).

The starting annual salary for this position is approximately $38,000. The technician will be based out of Reno, Nevada and will use lab-owned vehicles for travel to field sites. The ideal candidate for the position has some previous research experience (lab and/or field) and has a strong interest in being a part of a collaborative team working on questions related to benthic cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in rivers. This position is ideal for candidates seeking post-baccalaureate research experience but all applicants will be considered.
