Penn State’s Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI) invites applications for multiple Postdoctoral Scholar positions in quantitative climate and climate change research. Successful candidates will join a multi-institutional and transdisciplinary research team with interests in basic climate science, climate risk management, multisector dynamics, and climate data product development, as well as climate change translation and outreach. The work of the team is supported both internally (https://clima.psu.edu<https://clima.psu.edu/>, https://psirc.psu.edu<https://psirc.psu.edu/>) and by external awards from multiple federal agencies, including NSF, NOAA (https://midatlanticrisa.org<https://midatlanticrisa.org/>), and DOE (https://pches.psu.edu<https://pches.psu.edu/>, https://icom.pnnl.gov<https://icom.pnnl.gov/>, http://tiny.cc/bsec). Within the scope of this portfolio, selected postdoctoral scholars will have the opportunity to participate in the co-design of research projects that support their scholarly interests. The position provides unique opportunities for research, education, outreach, decision support, cross-disciplinary mentoring, and professional development.
Applicants must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g. atmospheric science, oceanography, geography, geosciences, statistics, applied math, engineering, computer science, economics, decision analysis, etc.) prior to the starting date of their appointment. Competitive candidates will have strong computational and quantitative skills, familiarity with climate datasets, and a clear orientation toward transdisciplinary collaboration. Proficiency in one or more relevant programming languages (e.g. R, Python, NCL, Julia, Fortran) and evidence of effective scholarly communication are both essential. Experience working in a high-performance Linux cluster computing environment is also desirable.
