*PALEONTOLOGICAL LABORATORY SUPERVISOR*

PLSUP $25 - $30+/hour DOE
Applied EarthWorks, Inc. (Æ) has an opening for a full time Paleontological
Laboratory Supervisor in the laboratory at our Pasadena, CA office.
Duties:
The Laboratory Supervisor assists in the management of paleontological
collections originating from projects throughout California. Working under
the direction of the Laboratory Manager and Paleontology Program Manager,
the Lab Supervisor will supervise daily tasking of Laboratory Technicians,
ensure full adherence to project-specific laboratory protocols, and monitor
work progress and labor pace to support budget and schedule projections.
Duties include completing and supervising laboratory tasks from intake
through curation. Laboratory Supervisors are responsible for project Access
databases, including data entry, maintenance, and quality
control/assurance, training new Laboratory Technicians, ensuring
sorting/laboratory procedures are followed, and timely communication with
the Laboratory Manager, Project Managers, and Principal Investigators.
Laboratory Supervisors also are responsible for tracking samples
(paleontological, rock, and/or sediment) throughout the cataloging,
analysis, reporting, and curation preparation and transfer processes.
Laboratory Supervisors may participate in establishing temporary field
laboratories during paleontological monitoring and data recovery as needed.
Skill Requirements:
- Advanced competence with paleontological resources, including
expertise in fossil identification.
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in museum registration and
collections management as well as fossil preparation, photography, museum
registration, and collections management.
- Experience with sorting, identification, and photography of
paleontological resources under magnification, especially microvertebrates.
- Advanced Microsoft Access capabilities and ability to attain an
understanding of the Æ catalog coding system.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong work ethic and effective communication skills.
- Effective technical writing with prior experience preparing final
collection catalogs.
- Commitment to successfully complete high-quality work timely in a
supportive team environment.
- History of successful supervision and management of laboratory
technicians and interns; able to lead others as appropriate.
- Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations preferred.
- Experience with design and implementation of public outreach events;
may involve handouts, exhibits, and public speaking related to paleontology
or natural history.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of undergraduate degree in geology, biology, or related field,
plus 3 years of full-time-equivalent laboratory experience in a supervisory
role.
- A graduate degree in paleontology is preferred.
- Demonstrated technical specialty (e.g., vertebrate, invertebrate,
paleobotany) is desired.
- Successful completion of geological and/or paleontological field
school is desired.
- Experience with Survey 1-2-3 and ArcCollector a plus.
- Valid driver’s license, with the willingness to drive in “off-road”
conditions.
- Pre-employment drug screening may apply for specific project
