*Research Technician/Associate in Marine Optics and Remote Sensing*
*Overview*
The Marine Optics and Remote Sensing Laboratory
<https://www.bigelow.org/science/lab/marine-optics-and-remote-sensing/> seeks
a Research Technician or Associate to join them in creating remote sensing
methods to measure ocean biology and biogeochemistry, and applying these
methods to study changes in marine ecosystems. Activities in the research
group include measurements of optical properties of phytoplankton and
inorganic materials in the laboratory and on research cruises, measurements
of associated biological and biogeochemical parameters (e.g. particulate
carbon concentrations, phytoplankton chlorophyll-a concentrations, cell
counts), computational modeling, and working with satellite ocean color
data. This position will support research efforts in the group, primarily
by performing laboratory measurements and participating in occasional
research cruises. Duties will include measurements of optical properties of
materials in seawater, biological and biogeochemical analyses (such as
running samples for biogenic silica and phytoplankton chlorophyll-a
concentrations), maintenance of phytoplankton cultures, and microscopy
(using a light microscope and a FlowCam). This position will also be
responsible for data processing and analysis of laboratory measurements,
general lab organization, ordering, and chemical inventories.
This position is offered for an initial two-year period, with continuation
depending on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. Salary
is commensurate with demonstrated experience, ranging from $41,000-50,000
per year, and comes with a generous benefits package including health care,
retirement contribution, and paid time off.
