I am writing to let you know about* opportunities at AIP that might be of
interest to you or those in your networks.* The American Institute of
Physics is *building out its research and analysis function to create a new
operational unit known as AIP Research*. This new research-driven center of
excellence builds on existing AIP capabilities and is designed to execute a
research strategy and agenda focused on the interplay of the physical
sciences, relevant public policy, and the discipline’s culture, with the
goal of empowering positive change in the physical sciences enterprise.
*To launch this function, we are hiring two key positions: (1) a Chief
Research Officer and (2) a Director of Research in History, Policy, and
Culture.* We want to ensure these opportunities are broadcast widely and
would ask for your help in this regard. We are open to all opportunities
and backgrounds. They may come from the physical sciences but may also come
from the political or social sciences or other STEMM fields. It will be a
key marker of success in our hiring if we have as diverse a set of
candidates as possible.
1. *The Chief Research Officer* will lead the effort to build on AIP’s
existing capabilities and past success—that is, in social science research,
public policy reporting, and the preservation and promulgation of
understanding of the history of the physical sciences. AIP Research will
advance the physical sciences enterprise through horizon scanning, research
and analysis, and thought-leadership aimed at promoting and catalyzing
future change and progress—all to the goal of strengthening of the research
enterprise to address societal challenges and spotlight future potential
solutions enabled by the physical sciences.
AIP Research will focus on empowering AIP’s Member Societies, AIP
Affiliates, the community of physical scientists, and policymakers and
influencers with research and analysis products that address a wide range
of important topics. Topics could include, but not be limited to, the
demographics, culture and diversity of the physical sciences community; the
trajectory of public policy that impacts our science; the future of
scholarly communication and publishing; the balancing of research openness
and security in basic and applied research; overcoming obstacles to
international scientific collaboration; addressing challenges to harnessing
scientific knowledge to make progress on national and global challenges;
and so on. The CRO will report directly to the AIP Chief Executive Officer,
and the CRO will be a member of the Executive Management Team.

1. The * Director of Research in History, Policy, and Culture* will lead
AIP’s research and analysis operations at the interface of science,
history, policy, and culture. Reporting to the AIP Chief Research
Officer, the Director will oversee the work of AIP’s existing history
programs and the building of a new physical sciences public policy research
and analysis function. AIP’s history programs, currently within the Center
for History of Physics, include AIP’s oral history program, programs
supporting early career historians, and the production and promulgation of
history-focused content.
The Director will be a key leader in AIP Research, empowering positive
change in the physical sciences enterprise. The Director will be a member
of AIP’s Portfolio and Innovation Council—a staff-led forum for making
recommendations to AIP’s executive leadership on optimizing the full
portfolio of AIP programs, products, and services.

We are conducting informational interviews with some folks who have heard
about these unique opportunities. Please feel free to share this
information with any prospective candidates.
We are hoping to make progress quickly on hiring these key positions.
Thanks for listening! Let me know if you have any questions about either
role.
Cheers!
