[ES_JOBS_NET] Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Climate Field Reconstruction at Chiba University, Japan

Okazaki Lab. at Chiba University, Japan, has embarked on an exciting and ambitious program to reconstruct the last millennium climate on a daily scale as well as on an annual scale by fusing past personal diaries, climate proxies, and climate model simulations. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to tackle this with us. The position is funded by JSPS as part of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S) led by Kei Yoshimura at The University of Tokyo. The position is expected to be in person at Chiba University, Chiba, Japan.

The successful applicant will [1] perform simulations with GCMs for the last millennium, [2] merge paleo-observations and simulations with offline data assimilation, and [3] develop a new data assimilation method that can constrain model dynamics with paleo-observations. The postdoc will be expected to collaborate with other members of the project.

The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory performance and available funding. The position will remain open until filled. The preferred start date is Nov 2023.


Qualifications, requirements, and skills:
- A Ph.D. in physical science with expertise in meteorology, climate, hydrology, or related field
- Proficiency in high-level programming languages (e.g., FORTRAN, Matlab, Python)
- Knowledge of data assimilation is advantageous
- Demonstrated ability to disseminate results to scientific community through peer-reviewed publications, conference/workshop presentations etc.
- Good communication and team working skills while being proactive
- Proficiency in both written and spoken English or Japanese


What we can offer:
Chiba University can offer a generous compensation package.
The annual hiring salary is around ¥5,000,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on the University's internal career track classification.
Some relocation funds are available for this position following the University's relocation processes and procedures.
