*One-course teaching opportunity in Spring 2024 : GY250 Introduction to
Soil Science/Soils*

The Colorado College Department of Geology invites applications for a
single Block teaching position in soil science. The course dates are
October 23 - November 15, 2023. Employment is as a non-tenure-track
visiting assistant professor or instructor. The soils course is an
intermediate-level elective course, taught in the unique Colorado College
Block format. Blocks are 3.5 weeks in duration, allowing for immersive and
field-based teaching/learning, as faculty and students are involved in only
a single course at a time. More information about the one-course-at-a-time
format implemented at Colorado College can be found here:
https://www.coloradocollege.edu/basics/blockplan/

The position will involve teaching an undergraduate soils course, that
provides foundational concepts and processes in soil science through use of
local field trips and relevant instrumentation available in the Geology
Department (
https://www.coloradocollege.edu/academics/dept/geology/facilities.html).
Course enrollment is limited to 25 students, but is typically < 18. The
Geology Department consists of six faculty and four full-time staff. Our
members contribute to CC’s interdisciplinary Environmental Program, and
some students in the soils course will also come from that academic major.
Three support staff (technical director and two paraprofessionals) share
duties for instructional support, spanning the use of field and lab
instrumentation, field logistics including driving vehicles to/from field
sites, and instructional assistance. The College’s Transportation Dept
maintains a vehicle fleet that is available for field-based courses, and
the Department is equipped for multi-day field trips with camping. Colorado
College’s residential campus is located in Colorado Springs, in a varied
geologic, geographic and cultural landscape at the base of Pikes Peak.

*Duties will include*: Developing and teaching the undergraduate soils
course, which should provide an introduction to fundamentals and extend to
problem-based teaching/learning in the area of Colorado Springs and the
southern Rocky Mountains region. Field localities for course projects can
be selected in consultation with CC Geology Department members.

*Qualifications: *Applicants must have completed or be scheduled to
complete a PhD in earth or environmental sciences, with expertise in soil
science. Applications showcasing experience in field data collection and
instruction of undergraduates in the characterization and investigation of
soils will be prioritized. Applicants must hold a US Drivers License. An
acquaintance with the bedrock and surficial geology of the Front Range or
Rocky Mountain region is advantageous.

Colorado College is dedicated to the development of faculty and staff who
are committed to inclusive practices in teaching, learning, and working, to
increasing diversity in academia, and to countering racism. Candidates who
can contribute to these goals are particularly encouraged to apply.
Information about Colorado College’s DEI position and anti-racism
commitment can be found at
https://www.coloradocollege.edu/other/antiracism-commitment/.

*Minimum Qualifications:* A Ph.D. conferred or near completion, with an
emphasis in soils or soil science, and instructional experience as
described above.

CC Geology Department facilities and equipment are listed here:
https://www.coloradocollege.edu/academics/dept/geology/facilities.html

Off-site College facilities/bunkhouses that are available for use during
the soils course in Fall Semester are near Florissant, CO, and in Crestone,
CO.
