Thu Sep 8 10:32:10 MDT 2022

We seek a highly motivated PhD student to study the distribution of
halogens (Cl, F, Br, I) in plutonic and volcanic rocks in a continental arc
setting (bulk rock and in-situ). The student will join Emily H. G.
Cooperdock at Brown University <https://deeps.brown.edu> and will work
closely with collaborators Jaime Barnes (University of Texas at Austin) and
Jade Star Lackey (Pomona College).

Funding: This is an NSF-funded project that includes analytical and salary
funds for the student. Brown University offers
<https://deeps.brown.edu/graduate/applying-program> 5 years of competitive
stipends to all PhD students who remain in good standing.

Project details: The student will travel between Brown University, UT
Austin, and have field work in the Sierra Nevada, CA. Lab work includes
preparing rock powders for halogen analysis and thin section petrography.
The student will gain analytical experience using pyrohydrolysis,
inductively-coupled mass spectrometry, and electron microprobe.

Desired qualifications:

   - A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Earth sciences or related fields.
   - Attention to detail and experience (or demonstrated potential) in
laboratory techniques (e.g., rock powdering, wet lab chemistry, ICPMS,
   microprobe)
   - Flexibility to travel between institutions (primarily Brown and UT
   Austin)
   - Ability to do field work in the Sierra Nevada (will require hiking to
some study sites and carrying rock samples and field gear)
   - Experience (or demonstrated potential) in educational outreach and
inclusive field work and teaching techniques.

If you are interested, please contact Emily H. G. Cooperdock (
emily_cooperdock at brown.edu) via email with a description of your interests,
relevant experience, and CV. [Note: Emily is currently at University of
Southern California and will start at Brown in July 2023. For more on
