The ministry of Environment and Parks, which is part of the Government of Alberta, is recruiting a Director of Watershed Sciences.

Role:
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Watershed Sciences (the Director) is responsible for providing strategic leadership in scientific planning, evaluation, and reporting of the Province of Alberta's surface and groundwater quality and quantity and watershed quality monitoring program design and supportive research programs.
You will promote and maintain effective communications, by arranging and maintaining contractual agreements with cooperating agencies and collaborating parties. You will supervise program assessment and evaluation, manage funds, support and lead program integration efforts, and partner with relevant organizations. The Director will represent the ministry through high level engagement in professional activities and associations at the regional, national, and, where relevant, international level. The Director is also responsible for communicating complex scientific issues and results to a wide range of expert and non-expert audiences, ensuring stakeholders can understand and support the science that drives monitoring, evaluation, and reporting decisions in the department.
You will foster an engaging, respectful, and professional working environment founded on the Alberta Public Service (APS) values of Integrity, Respect, Accountability and Excellence. You will provide leadership for watershed science section staff as well as the tools, processes, and training to enable them to effectively meet the challenges of delivering on the department's mandate in relation to watershed science and cumulative environmental effects assessment, evaluation and reporting.
Requirements:
Related post-secondary education (e.g. bachelor’s degree in environmental science or engineering, hydrology, limnology, geology, hydrogeology, social sciences, interdisciplinary studies, agrology, geography, natural resource management)
7 years of progressive leadership in government, academia, Non-Government Organizations and/or industry experience in water science or environmental science.
Valid Class 5 Drivers’ License (or equivalent)
Equivalency:
Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
Assets:
This position requires supervision of senior PhD level staff, so demonstrated experience and a record of scientific publishing in the peer reviewed literature is desirable.
Experience with carrying out field-based research and environmental monitoring programs is desirable. This position works closely with field operations partners inside the public service and in external organizations (e.g. consulting, research organizations, citizen science or community-based monitoring organizations).
Breadth and depth of knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations, and policies of relevance to the government's watershed science and monitoring programs, including Alberta's Water Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Public Lands Act, Fisheries Act, Wildlife Act, Alberta Land Stewardship Act, authorization processes, decision-making, plans and regulatory programs delivered by the GoA departments and agencies as well as relevant national legislation, regulations and policies.
