The *Ecosystems Lab* <https://ponettelab.cargo.site/> studies interactions
between humans, the atmosphere, and the biosphere in the context of a
changing environment. Our current focus is on how urbanization and air
pollution affect ecosystems in human-modified landscapes. We are seeking a *Lab
Specialist* to work on several new exciting highly collaborative and
interdisciplinary research projects. One project will examine how
particulate concentration, flux, and composition in water change with
passage through forest canopies. Another project will investigate the role
of digital tools on environmental justice in urban forests. The lab is
moving from UNT to the University of Utah in January 2023.
At the University of Utah, the Lab Specialist will work within a creative
and highly interdisciplinary setting in the *Natural History Museum of Utah*
<https://nhmu.utah.edu/> (NHMU). The lab specialist will engage directly
with NHMU staff, especially in collections and research, to foster an
exceptional experience for the team. The lab specialist will assist the PI
with the coordination of several grant-funded projects and overall
management of the Ecosystems Lab. Primary duties include day-to-day lab
operations and equipment maintenance, sample preparation and analysis, and
development of methods and lab protocols. In addition, we seek an
individual interested in contributing to the design of new museum
collections-based research and an individual who has experience and/or
interest in supervising and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.
At the Natural History Museum of Utah, we recognize that our strength and
sustainability as an organization stem from diversity and inclusion. For
this reason, we are committed to fostering equity, recruiting and retaining
a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve, and empowering
staff members in developing an accessible and inclusive work environment.
We also place a strong emphasis on providing an exceptional experience to
every guest who visits the museum or participates in any of our programs.
We believe that everyone at NHMU, at every level and in all departments,
are a critical part of providing this level of experience. Therefore, all
staff members receive ongoing training and are expected to consistently
contribute to creating exceptional, memorable, and inclusive experiences
for our guests, partners, and the community.
All applications submitted before *January 15* will be fully considered.
Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
Anticipated start date is March 15, 2023.
This position is funded by a research grant and will extend for a term of
four years.
