*Assistant Professor of Earth System Science (tenure track): Organic
Geochemistry*
The Department of Earth System Science (ESS) at The University of
California, Irvine is recruiting an Assistant Professor (tenure track)
anchored in Earth system science with a research focus in Organic
Geochemistry. The goal is to advance our understanding of the complex
processes responsible for the transformation, fate, and stability of
organic matter and its role in the Earth system. Candidates may focus on
any component of the terrestrial and aquatic systems. Areas of interest
include redox processes such as carbon-metal interactions,
biogeochemical/biological transformations, carbon sequestration, or
geochemistry of the past and/or future. Diverse scientific approaches
are encouraged, for example detailed characterization of dissolved and
particulate pools using novel MS and/or spectroscopic techniques coupled
with compound specific studies or C isotopes (e.g. AMS). Candidates are
encouraged to use modelling in their research, but experimental
measurements should be the majority of their work.
We make this appointment with the goal of strengthening the department’s
commitment to research, and teaching, and inclusive excellence. UC
Irvine’s ESS department was founded to explore the global environmental
changes that occur on human time scales. The department has expanded its
domain with 26 full-time faculty from diverse backgrounds
(http://www.ess.uci.edu/). ESS is the home of world-class geochemical
facilities, including the W.M. Keck Carbon Cycle AMS facility, soon
including the new MICADAS, and the Center for Isotope Tracers that
offers stable isotope and ICPMS capabilities.
The successful applicant will have: a doctoral degree and research
experience in Organic Geochemistry or a related field and a strong
research agenda, a commitment to excellence in teaching and in promoting
diversity and inclusion, and an interest in becoming part of a collegial
and cross-disciplinary department. The position will start July 1, 2023.
