The Department of Environmental Science in the College of Arts & Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time, open rank tenure-line position, beginning August 1, 2023. Applicants should have a PhD or anticipate PhD completion by August 2023 in relevant fields. Depending on experience and qualification, the appointee to this position may be recommended for tenure at the time of hiring. Candidates can apply at the assistant, associate, or full professor level.

We are seeking an environmental scientist whose research focuses on climate-driven change and intersects with one, or preferably more, of the following areas: modern environmental challenges, environmental justice, environmental racism, indigenous knowledge, and/or environmental health. The most competitive candidates will have the following qualifications: a strong research record, including publications in peer-reviewed journals and demonstrated success in or potential for obtaining external funding; ability to effect change by communicating research findings to policymakers and the general public; a record of interdisciplinary collaborations; motivation and ability to achieve excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels; a record of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion; and a willingness to help meet the needs of our growing department through student advising, working with other faculty members, and taking on service and leadership roles as needed.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a strong, externally-funded research program that includes undergraduate students, graduate students, and/or postdocs while teaching undergraduate and graduate level environmental science classes (typically 2 per semester that will be a mix of general classes for majors and non-majors and classes in the candidate’s area of expertise).
