Subject: a research position on the role of Aeolus winds for atmospheric processes

Dear Colleague,

can you please forward the information about this exciting job opportunity to your institutes and circles?

Many thanks and regards,

Nedjeljka

A 2-year postdoctoral / research associate position is open in the Atmospheric Dynamics and Predictability group in Hamburg, https://www.mi.uni-hamburg.de/en/arbeitsgruppen/theoretische-meteorologie.html<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mi.uni-hamburg.de%2Fen%2Farbeitsgruppen%2Ftheoretische-meteorologie.html&data=05%7C01%7Cangela.benedetti%40ecmwf.int%7C35ebdb709f14446941b908dacd66998a%7C21b711c6aab74d369ffbac0357bc20ba%7C1%7C0%7C638048137785645144%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=GGkbrLW3ZJFVnE0X6nMkuog4yhkVzLBWHIWXs3HGYfE%3D&reserved=0>, on the project funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) on Aeolus+Processes that will be carried out together with ECMWF.

The ESA Earth Explorer Wind Mission Aeolus was successfully launched on 22 August 2018, https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/FutureEO/Aeolus<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.esa.int%2FApplications%2FObserving_the_Earth%2FFutureEO%2FAeolus&data=05%7C01%7Cangela.benedetti%40ecmwf.int%7C35ebdb709f14446941b908dacd66998a%7C21b711c6aab74d369ffbac0357bc20ba%7C1%7C0%7C638048137785645144%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=ShjTMLvlaQuo0MEZD7moWoytfy%2BoUumTCRCvNPxGkyk%3D&reserved=0>. The assimilation of Aeolus winds improved global forecasts in all operational numerical weather prediction models, especially in the tropics. In the project, observing system experiments with the ECMWF model will be analysed to quantify the impact of Aeolus on dynamical processes and to compare the information content of Aeolus winds with that of other observations in relation to data assimilation modelling.

For questions and further information about the project, contact Nedjeljka Zagar, nedjeljka.zagar at uni-hamburg.de<mailto:nedjeljka.zagar at uni-hamburg.de>.

Requirements include degrees in physical sciences, engineering or applied mathematics. A PhD topic of relevance for numerical weather prediction is an advantage, but qualified candidates without a PhD degree will be also considered, with a possibility to get a PhD. We are looking for candidates with a keen interest in Earth observations and their use in weather forecasting.
Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions depending on qualification (E14 or E13), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the University of Hamburg and those of the German civil service.

Applications are accepted through December 31, 2022, with start date as soon as possible afterward. The applications need to be submitted through the online application system (see link above).
