Dear colleagues,

The University of Utah Carbon Science research group of the Department of
Civil & Environmental Engineering is looking for a student working in
one/multiple of the research areas of geologic carbon dioxide
sequestration, petroleum reservoir simulations, and multi-phase flow and
coupling processes.

The group has multiple geologic CO2 sequestration (GCS) projects ongoing
and under application, along with projects of improving oil production from
unconventional fields, and machine-learning approaches for accelerating
real-time decisions in subsurface applications. Other research interests of
the group include greenhouse gas emission monitoring/sensing, hydrogen
storage, geothermal system, etc.

The successful candidate will collaborate with scientists and engineers in
the group as well as with other groups in the department, the Energy &
Geosciences Institute (EGI), and external industrial and academic partners.

Some requirements/desired skillsets include:
 • A Bachler’s degree in STEM and geology related majors with a good GPA is
required. A Master’s degree in engineering or geology is desired, but we
will also consider students with a Bachler’s degree and related
research/study experiences.
• Enthusiasm for learning new knowledge.
• Experience on related research, peer-reviewed journal publications and/or
conference presentations are preferred.
• Experience on reservoir simulations (e.g., Eclipse, CMG, TOUGHREACT,
etc.) is desired.
• Experience on machine learning techniques is desired.
• Experience on laboratory experiments and tests is desired.

To apply, please contact Dr. Ting Xiao (ting.xiao at utah.edu) for further
information.

Best regards,
Ting Xiao, Ph.D.
Research Assistant Professor
