Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that NOAA/GFDL has opened a position for a Federal
research scientist to work on sea level. This is a term hire position to
explore processes giving rise to regional sea level and extremes along the
US East Coast. The position will have a particular emphasis working with
high-resolution and regional configurations of MOM6 for the Northwest
Atlantic domain. Officially the job title for this position is Physical
Scientist, but someone with a background in physical oceanography or
numerical methods for modeling geophysical systems and experience in
oceanography or research related to sea level would be the ideal candidate.
NOAA/GFDL is a national laboratory that carries out long-term research that
is relevant to NOAA's mission, in this case related to sea level science.
The formal announcement of this position, along with details of how to
apply, can be found at:
https://www.usajobs.gov/job/690473900
This position will be open for applications from *Tuesday, November 22,
2022*, through *Monday, December 5, 2022*.
This position is advertised at the ZP-III level (equivalent to GS-11/12).
This is a *term appointment* not to exceed 3 years with possible extensions
up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this
position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service. In
addition to a relevant scientific background, the successful incumbent must
be a United States citizen.
The full description of the duties of this position are given below.
The United States government does not discriminate in employment on the
basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and gender
identity), national origin, political affiliation, sexual orientation,

employee organization, retaliation, parental status, military service or
other non-merit factor.
Please consider applying for this position, or please help us by forwarding
this announcement to any candidates for whom this position might be of
interest, or to any relevant mailing lists.

===========================================================
As a Research Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:
* Applies broad knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of
various physical sciences to conduct theoretical and experimental research
to understand the fundamental physical processes controlling coastal sea
level in its past, present, and future states.
* Performs research through global and regional Earth system modeling
across ocean, atmospheric, and terrestrial/hydrologic systems to improve
understanding of coastal inundation and sea level processes.
* Contributes to the development of analytical methods, evaluation
products, and diagnostics to study sea level processes across timescales.
Contributes to the development of global and regional ocean modeling
systems, including the representation of physical and dynamical processes
in geophysical fluid dynamics codes.
* Contributes to the delivery of sea level predictions and projections in
support of NOAA's operational missions, engaging with coastal impacts
researchers and managers to develop actionable information for risk-based
decision making.
