Job Title: Ice Sheet and Glacier Remote Sensing Research Scientist
Location: Pasadena, CA

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, invites applications for a position in the Sea Level and Ice Group for a research scientist to support ongoing NASA sponsored projects, missions, and mission concepts that are targeted at improving our understanding of large-scale glaciological processes and predictability of sea level rise. The scientist would work to produce higher level data products from lower level remote sensing observations with the goal of accelerating scientific discovery and geophysical understanding from a diverse collection of existing and future satellite observations. Example products include spatially and temporally complete records of elevation, mass, coverage, velocity, flux, and ice thickness. The scientist would also develop and apply novel machine learning methods for improving data products and for inverting for unmeasured ice properties. The scientist would work closely with NISAR, ICESat-2 and GRACE missions and would assist in the formulation of new suborbital and satellite concepts targeted at reducing uncertainty in projections of ice sheet change. The scientist would interact with other scientists in the Sea-Level and Ice Group, Earth Science Section and those interested in water worlds. The individual would be expected to be a leader in applying novel methods to extract glaciological insights from massive archives of remote sensing observations and to maintain a strong publication profile. Ideally, the scientist would be able to work with ice sheet and ocean modelers within the Sea-Level and Ice Group to elucidate findings derived from remote sensing observations and to support data assimilation and model-based inference efforts. The individual will also support and lead science and technology proposals to NASA ROSES calls. At JPL they will bridge between science, engineering, and data science. To support mission concepts, scientific publications, and outreach activities, the individual requires strong communication skills that should include an adept ability for accessible written work and to create visualizations that can convey important glaciological and remote sensing concepts and to simplify conclusions derived from complex data.

This position requires the following qualifications:

  *   PhD in Glaciology or other relevant Earth Science discipline.
  *   A deep knowledge of glaciological and remote sensing principles, as evidenced by a

record of high-impact peer-reviewed publications.

  *   Strong programing skillset, with a preference for Julia and Python languages
  *   Demonstrated ability to work efficiently with massive archives of geocoded satellite data and to generate higher-level synthesis data products
  *   Experience developing open-source code and libraries relevant to the access, analysis and manipulation of large satellite data archives
  *   Excellent oral (including public speaking), written and visual communication skills.
The following qualifications are preferred:

  *   Knowledge of the goals of NASA's missions for NISAR, GRACE-FO, and ICESat-2.
  *   Experience developing and supporting suborbital and satellite missions.
