The Nuclear Waste Program <http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/nwp/index.html> within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Double-shell Tank System Regulatory Lead (Environmental Specialist 4)<https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/washington/jobs/3427293/double-shell-tank-system-regulatory-lead-environmental-specialist-4> position. This position is located in our Richland Field Office (RFO) in Richland, WA<https://www.ci.richland.wa.us/>.
During Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery, employees are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. This position is expected to work in the office for less than 1 day per week. Ecology is following current state guidance regarding mask requirements, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing.
In this role, you will serve as the regulatory lead for the Hanford Site Double-Shell Tank System (DST). The Double-Shell Tank System has 28 approximately 1 million gallon underground tanks and contain a mixture of radioactive and dangerous wastes. The Nuclear Waste Program (NWP) is in the process of issuing a WA Dangerous Waste Permit to Department of Energy for many dangerous waste management units of which the DST System is one. The successful applicant would gain experience in working on one of the most challenging dangerous waste permit in the nation.
What you will do:
* Be a subject matter and team lead for the NWP staff performing reviews of the DST unit permit applications, development, issuance, and management of the final unit permit.
* Serve as a Team Lead for an Environmental Engineer 5 and Chemist 4, and may also need to include an Environmental Engineer 3, a Toxicologist 2, a Toxicologist 3 and a Hydrogeologist 4 to review the DST Hazardous Waste permit information.
* Oversee compliance with permit requirements.
* Negotiate cleanup and permit conditions with DOE and its contractor staff and develop final decision documents for issuance.
* Represent the NWP in explaining scientific bases and technical approaches to permit conditions, regulatory requirements, and policies at meetings with the USDOE, its contractors and/or consultants, external interest groups, and technical oversight groups.
