The UC Irvine School of Social Ecology seeks applications to fill a full-time Postdoctoral Employee position in water resources policy. Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in such fields as natural resources management, environmental economics, water resources engineering, geography, or other fields related to water and wastewater policy.

We seek a self-driven, creative thinker with strong quantitative and interpersonal skills to help accomplish an important and interesting set of research tasks. The successful candidate will join an exciting new initiative focused on the future of U.S. wastewater infrastructure with an initial focus on improvement in the Black Belt region of Alabama. The Black Belt region faces a confluence of rural poverty, a lack of available sewers, and shrink-swell clay soils that preclude the use of affordable onsite wastewater technologies. The project brings together expertise in water management, engineering, public health, law, and policy, bringing together an interdisciplinary team from Columbia University, the University of Alabama, University of South Alabama, University of California, Irvine, and the University of North Carolina. A link to the project description is here: https://worldprojects.columbia.edu/transforming-wastewater-infrastructure-united-states.

Excellent statistical analysis skills are preferred, including expertise in categorical data analysis using maximum likelihood estimation. Candidates should have knowledge of statistical software, such as Stata or R. A working knowledge of the literature related to water resources management (regardless of the specific discipline) is not required but desired; an intellectual interest in interdisciplinary study is essential.

The successful candidate will lead the component of the project that characterizes the scope and nature of inadequate wastewater services nationwide, using large datasets. Topics include analyzing disparities in wastewater services and developing predictive models of future access to wastewater services.

The candidate will be mentored by Dr. Maura Allaire and will work closely with faculty collaborators and doctoral students. Overall, it is expected that the postdoctoral employee will engage in high-level research and be involved in analysis and publication.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and is benefits-eligible. The initial appointment will be for one year with extensions for further years dependent on performance. Expected start date is June 1, 2022; if necessary, modifications are possible. Applicants will need to submit a dossier including: (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a cover letter, (3) sample publication, and (4) contact information for three references (please do not solicit letters).

To ensure your application is given full consideration, files should be completed by March 11, 2022. Priority will be given to applications received by this date. Please direct questions about this position to Dr. Maura Allaire at maura.allaire at uci.edu. Applications must be uploaded electronically.
