Description of Position: The Department of Physics at the University of Nevada, Reno is seeking applications for a post-doctoral researcher to work on a Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Systems Research (ASR) project focused on understanding the processes that control the depth and vigor of convective clouds forming over orography. The researcher will lead observational analyses using existing observations from ARM scanning radars and lidars deployed during the CACTI field campaign. The specific goal of the project is to understand how boundary layer and orographic processes (e.g., thermally or mechanically driven upslope flows) control convective outcomes. These observational analyses will compliment collaborations with numerical modeling teams investigating the predictability of orographic convection. Ideal candidates will exhibit strengths in some subset of the following: orographic processes (e.g., thermally driven circulations), convective processes, radar and/or lidar observations, processing and reducing large datasets (e.g., Principal Component Analysis), coding in MATLAB or Python. Previous research need not be closely aligned with the focus of this project and I strongly encourage applicants from diverse background, including from historically under-represented groups in Atmospheric Science.

The successful candidate will join a growing research group focused on using state-of-the-science observations to advance our understanding of both fire-generated and orographic convective processes. The researcher will be housed in the Physics Department at the University of Nevada, Reno and participate in the Atmospheric Science Program, which is run jointly with the Desert Research Institute (DRI). Opportunities to collaborate with researchers at DOE national laboratories (e.g., PNNL) are expected.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or a closely related discipline
Expertise in some subset of the following:

  * Orographic processes (e.g., thermally and/or mechanically driven circulations)
  *   Convective processes
  *   Radar and/or lidar observations
  * Processing and reducing large datasets (e.g., Principal Component Analysis)
  * Coding in MATLAB or Python
Position Location: Reno, Nevada
