Are you interested in advancing climate adaptation work across communities
and landscapes in Northern Minnesota through your graduate studies?
A new collaborative team between the University of Minnesota and the 1854
Treaty Authority is seeking a motivated graduate student to join our team
to help support climate adaptation efforts underway across the 1854 Ceded
Territory.

student will help the project team, under the supervision of Dr. Heidi Roop

Joseph Bauerkemper

1. evaluate progress, barriers to, and opportunities for adaptation in
this region, and;
2. lead the co-creation of an updated vulnerability assessment and
adaptation plan with the 1854 Treaty Authority and the Bois Forte, Fond du
Lac and Grand Portage Bands to advance ecological and cultural resilience.
This will include updating adaptation objectives, outcomes, and resilience
metrics for this region.
This student will be a critical member of our team and will have
opportunities to participate in tribal and community engagement and will
help with other project deliverables including the development of
interactive data tool, and communication and engagement efforts designed to
showcase the region’s progress towards community and ecosystem climate
resilience.
We are seeking students from a range of undergraduate degree backgrounds
including social, natural, physical, American Indian Studies/Indigenous
studies, and/or policy sciences. Working on this project students will
build skills related to climate adaptation planning, data analysis (both
quantitative and qualitative), tribal governance, and participatory
engagement processes. The student may pursue a degree in the Graduate
Program for Land and Atmospheric Science <https://laas.umn.edu/>; the Master
of Science in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy

; the Master of Tribal Resource and Environmental Stewardship

in Tribal Administration and Governance.

This is a two-year, fully funded, masters-level position with a preferred
start date in September 2022. Interested applicants should email the
