Graduate opportunity: physical processes in Indigenous managed ecosystems at Western Washington University
The Department of Environmental Science at Western Washington University, located in Bellingham, WA, is seeking applications for a Master’s of Science student to study residence time and physical processes within Indigenous managed ecosystems (clam gardens) with Dr. Sam Kastner and Dr. Marco Hatch beginning in fall quarter, 2023.
Required qualifications: Applicants must meet the departmental standards for admission listed here<https://cenv.wwu.edu/esci/ms-environmental-science> (https://cenv.wwu.edu/esci/ms-environmental-science). Note that the GRE is not required.
Additional desired qualifications include: experience with marine science, experience with computational data analysis (in Matlab, Python, or R), courses taken in calculus and physics, and prior work with Indigenous people.
About the opportunity: Clam gardens, Indigenous managed ecosystems in which a low wall separates the intertidal zone from deeper water, are common along the Pacific Northwest coast. Due to the low wall separating the garden from the offshore region, the residence time of the garden is thought to be larger than other nearshore environments, and this increased residence time is in turn thought to lead to a bivalve-favorable habitat. We seek ta student to investigate this hypothesis through a field campaign in summer 2024, in which we will use state-of-the-art oceanographic instrumentation to measure water properties, currents, and waves inside and outside a local clam garden. From these data, the student will be able to investigate the influence of tides, waves, and other coastal processes on clam garden residence time and nutrient fluxes. To carry out this project, we are looking for a candidate who is interested in collecting and analyzing observational data and comfortable working with multiple ways of knowing. This position will be fully funded through a teaching assistant appointment which will cover tuition (including out-of-state) and a stipend.
For prospective students: Before applying, please contact Sam Kastner at kastnes at wwu.edu<mailto:kastnes at wwu.edu>. Please include a CV, unofficial transcripts, description of your professional and research interests, relevant experience, why this opportunity is of interest, and any questions about the position.
